E. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND RECOGNITIONS

1. Student Member, Board of Education – Janet Louie, senior at Glendale High School, has served with distinction as student representative to the Board of Education during the 2019-2020 school year.

2. Student Advisory Council – The Board of Education would like to recognize our outstanding high school students who served on the Glendale Unified Student Advisory Council during the 2019-2020 school year. Basmah Hasan, Nardin Khalil, Ani Sahakyan, and Aleen Soghomonian, Clark Magnet High School; Emily Alvarez, Chloe Ataya, Brooke Beer, Nish Mehta, Hannah Roth, from Crescenta Valley High School; Toni Geragosian, Panuel Karapetian, Ani Keshishyan, Jaime Palido, from Daily High School; Ani Antonyan, Arline Daniali, Nayra Gharpetian, Janet Louie, from Glendale High School; Maria Akhverdyan, Kiana Avedisian, Diana Mirzoyan, Melia Movsesian, Monet Nadimyan, and Jessica Voskanian, from Hoover High School.

3. Hollywood Burbank Airport Tower Banner Competition – For the 13th year, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority offered students from Glendale, Burbank, and Pasadena Unified School Districts the opportunity to submit original artwork for their Hollywood Burbank Airport Tower Banner Competition. The 1st place entries from each school district will be displayed on the airport tower façade for approximately three months, and all winners’ artwork will be displayed in Terminal B throughout the year to offer travelers an added dimension to their experience of the airport and aviation. The 1st place winner this year from Glendale Unified School District is Donna Choi, grade 11, from Hoover High School. Other District finalists are Roza Torosyan, grade 11, from Clark Magnet High School (2nd place), and Chloe Bakert, grade 11, from Hoover High School (3rd place). The winners were recognized in a virtual ceremony on May 18, 2020. As an appreciation for GUSD’s participation and for supporting and promoting education programs for the arts, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority will donate $3,000 to fund GUSD arts education programs.

4. Burtis E. Taylor Community Education Award - The Board of Education will present the Burtis E. Taylor Community Education Award. Initiated in 1982, this award symbolizes the highest degree of dedication to public education as exemplified by Dr. Burtis E. Taylor, retired Superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District. The recipient for 2019-2020 is Eric Hamilton.

5. James R. Brown Leadership Award – The Board of Education will present the James R. Brown Leadership Award. This award is presented annually to a Certificated or Classified administrator for exemplary leadership skills and significant contribution to advancing the quality of public education. The recipient for 2019-2020 is Dr. Kyle Bruich, Principal, Roosevelt Middle School.

6. Robert A. Sanchis Award of Excellence – The Board of Education will present the Robert A. Sanchis Award of Excellence. This award is presented annually to one Certificated and one Classified employee whose interaction with the public and with fellow employees reflects positively on the District. The recipients for 2019-2020 are Dr. Stepan Mekhitarian, Coordinator III, Assessment and Accountability and Stacy Toy, Senior Administrative Secretary, Hoover High School.

7. Michael F. Escalante Senior Scholar Award – The Board of Education will present the Michael F. Escalante Senior Scholar Award. Initiated in 2010, this award is presented annually to an outstanding senior from each of our Glendale Unified High Schools. The recipients for 2019-2020 are Edgar Sahakian, Clark Magnet High School; Sarah Gabon, Crescenta Valley High School; Toni Geragosian, Daily High School; Artin Muradyan, Glendale High School; Robert Avila, Hoover High School.

8. Culinary Arts Scholarships – The Board of Education would like to recognize Hoover High School student Josh Simpao for being awarded the Milton Michael Matthew Mecchi Memorial Scholarship and the Ronald Newburg Foundation Scholarship through the Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP), and a scholarship to attend the Institute of Culinary Education in Pasadena.

9. Public Safety Academy Scholarships – The Board of Education would like to recognize Hoover High School Public Safety Academy students Johana Sanchez Vasquez for earning the Glendale Police Association Bob Bartle Memorial Scholarship and Alexis Gonzales for earning the Glendale Fire Association Sean Coogan Memorial Scholarship.

10. Construction and Technology Academy Scholarships – The Board of Education would like to recognize Glendale High School Construction Academy students Samantha Hutchinson for earning the Ada Salstrum Scholarship and the Building a Dream Award, and Luis Mendoza for earning the Building a Dream Award.

11. SkillsUSA Competition – The Board of Education would like to recognize the following students for earning gold medals and advancing to state-level competition at the SkillsUSA Competition: Clark Magnet High School: Nagashreya Guntireddy, Anna Hovhannisyan, Arpi Keshishian, Jannice Rigor, Michaella Reyes, Manual Avila Galvez, Vince Hilahan, Matthew Honda, Jeffrey Lewis, Chadi Saklaway, Roni Margousi, Alexa De Carlo, and Lucine Aghakhani; Crescenta Valley High School: Lialian Tahmasian, Angelica Agahsi and Rana Mehei.

12. Rio Hondo College Skill Competition – The Board of Education would like to recognize the following students from Hoover High School who earned top placements at the Rio Hondo College Skill Completion: Rodin Khodadadiankalavei for placing 1st in individual competition; Ara Colon, Rodin Khodadadiankalavei, and Aramo Matthewsian for placing 3rd in team competition.

13. FIRST Robotics Excellence in Engineering Award – The Board of Education would like to recognize Team 696 from Clark Magnet High School for earning the FIRST Robotics Los Angeles North Regional Excellence in Engineering Award, sponsored by Delphi. The award recognizes a team who has developed a functional and practical engineering solution to a specific problem. Team members include: Sarkis Agadzhanyan, Edgar Agekyan, Logan Andrews, Naomi Beach, Aidan Bradley, Jasmine Carlson, Alaina Joby Chiryankandath, Edward Dermardirosyan, Ruben Erkanian, Ian Fabre, Nathan Frinier, Vince Matheau Hilahan, Matthew Honda, Dino Hunter, Jeffrey Lewis, Allen Macam, Anthony Marinov, Allyson McCullagh, Manvel Muradyan, Hunter Pruett, Gabrielle Scott, Matthew Sorber-Petrie, Anthony Tarbinian, Christopher Waked and Jirasorn Wongpheruks.

15. My California GIS Mapping Showcase and Competition - The Board of Education would like to recognize Clark Magnet High School Environmental Engineering students for earning top placements at the 4th Annual California Geographic Alliance My California GIS Mapping Showcase and Competition: Natalie Baghumyan and Matt Orbita, 1st place, "The Growing Threat in the WUI;" Michaella Reyes and Jannice Rigor, 2nd place (tie), "Litter Makes our Water Bitter;" David Abramyan, 2nd place (tie), "Optimizing Clark Bus Routes;" Nagashreya Guntireddy and Arpi Keshishian, 4th place, "Conception Tragedy;" and Adam Kaplan, 5th place, "Where Does our School Litter Go?”

16. Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair – The Board of Education would like to recognize Crescenta Valley High School Science Research Class and Academy Students for earning placements at the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair: Jaya Hamkins, 1st place, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Senior Division; Melanie Khachatryan, 2nd place, Plant Biology and Physiology Senior Division; Eileen Stills, Honorable Mention, Pharmacology Senior Division; and Jiyoun Roh, Honorable Mention, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Senior Division.

17. Monte Vista Elementary Recognized as 2019 National Blue Ribbon School – The Board of Education would like to recognize Monte Vista Elementary for being named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

18. Clark Magnet High and Franklin Magnet Elementary Earn Federal and State Green Ribbon Awards – The Board of Education would like to recognize Clark Magnet High School and Franklin Magnet Elementary School for earning federal and state Green Ribbon Awards for sustainability. Clark Magnet was named a 2020 National Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education and a 2020 “Green Achiever,” the highest honor in the California Green Ribbon Schools Program, by the California Department of Education. Franklin Magnet Elementary School was named a 2020 California Green Ribbon School at the silver level by the California Department of Education.

19. Mann Elementary Earns America’s Best Urban Schools Award – The Board of Education would like to recognize Horace Mann Elementary School for being named one of America’s Best Urban Schools by the San Diego State University National Center for Urban School Transformation.

20. Six Glendale Unified Schools Recognized as 2020 California Distinguished School - The Board of Education would like to recognize Balboa, Mark Keppel, Horace Mann, Monte Vista, Valley View, and R.D. White Elementary Schools for being named 2020 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education.

21. Glendale Unified High Schools Nationally Ranked by U.S. News and World Report – The Board of Education would like to recognize Clark Magnet, Crescenta Valley, Glendale, and Hoover High Schools for being ranked in the top 16% of high schools nationwide by U.S. News and World Report.
